Our Favorite Milkshakes and Smoothies in Shanghai

Milkshakes and smoothies are difficult to resist. They come in all varieties, from the turbo healthy to the ones that give you a double chin. And of course there’s always the option of spiking it… but we’ll leave that up to you. Here are some of our Shanghai favs! 

SKANDINA

Why you should drink it: Their drinks are naturally sweet without any fake junk or additives, AND you can get it delivered! 

Never heard of Skandina? Where have you been all this time?? They’ve got some of the best lunch options available in the city, delivered within 40 minutes on elema (they also have a store at  Nanjing Xi Lu). Aside from their incredible lunch boxes they also serve perfect smoothies. Five options to choose from: Berry banana, Strawberry banana yogurt, Mango banana spinach (the one in photo), Mango smoothie and Brazilian avocado smoothie. Around RMB34 for a small, RMB40 a large.

Why you should drink it: The more you drink it, the more your body will love you 

Lizzy’s smoothies are some of the best products you can find in Shanghai. Designed by a highly-certified nutritionist, they prove how amazing healthy choices can taste sometimes. You are what you eat, hence everything that goes into your smoothie is carefully prepared and washed with filtered water. You can  order via their website or their wechat account (wechat ID: lizzyallnatural1) or pick up at one off their shops. Around RMB30 per bottle.

For sure Fatburger has a deliciously guilty option aside from their burgers: those irresistible milkshakes. Hand-scooped ice-cream topped with whipped cream in three classic flavors:  Strawberry, Chocolate, and Vanilla. They’re RMB48 each, delivery isn’t available yet but we’re told it will be soon.

Why you should drink it: because you can mix M&M’s & Kinder & Oreo inside and it is awesome

Millions of Milkshakes is an American brand which lets you pave your own choclately road to type 2 diabetes. They have celebrities like Beyonce, Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian backing their amazing drinks. In China, the brand is owned by Wang Xiaoming (some handsome actor/singer/model). You choose a size, a base (either vanilla ice cream, soy ice cream or yoghurt) and one of the extensive toppings bar option, and then they blend it up for you, either as a milkshake or as a sundae. Ta da! You got your milkshake!

RMB33 for a small cup, RMB48 a medium and RMB58 for a big one. Each topping will run you an extra RMB8.

Why you should drink it: because it mixes ice cream, chocolate and alcohol, awesome. 

Beef and Liberty may have the largest and best selection of spiked Milkshakes in the city. Classic ones will run you RMB60 with basic flavors such  as Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry. Funkier flavors are also avaialble such as Chocolate Mint and Ginger Vanilla. Four kinds of spiked shakes all at RMB75 with bourbon, Kahlua, chocolate cookies and vodka. We recommend you get the Mignight Wake Up.

Why you should drink it: Because it’s too cute not to try 

These colorful creations look like they came straight out of a Dr. Suess book. And as you would expect, they’re one of the most instagrammed/tweeted/weibo’d food item in Shanghai. It just so happens they taste great as well, RMB52 and well worth the cost.

Why you should drink it: Because it pleases the eyes as much as the mouth 

Daliah is a hotbed of food creativity and the celebration of weirdness, their mouthwatering super chocolaty milkshakes are no exception. And the best part: you can spike them!  We recommend the Peanut milk shake at RMB58, there are plenty of other options to choose from though.

Bistro Burger’s Milkshakes are classic American style- large portions of milk, sugar and ice cream you cannot stop yourself from slurping til the last drop. All drinks here are made with New Zealand ice cream. Spike option: the Grandmas Treat RMB55 (caramel Toffee liquor, Bourbon and Vanilla Ice Cream) or try an All Nighter (Kahlua, Baileys, Coffee Liquor, Vanilla Ice Cream). Don’t miss the “Free milkshake deal” on Wednesdays if you buy a burger or a pizza you get a milkshake free of charge. What’s not to love about that?

Why you should drink it: When’s the last time you tried an “alcoholic soy milk milkshake”? Gracie’s has several milkshakes on offer, the classics are made with Vanilla Beans, Balsamic Strawberry, Dark Chocolate, Mint Chocolate Chip, or Cookies 'n' Cream. The Crazy Banana blends Vanilla Beans with bananas. Both at RMB50.  Whereas the Mango Coconut is made with Soy milk (RMB55). For adults, spike your shake with bourbon, vodka, rum, or Bailey's for an extra RMB20.  Every Wednesday the Classic one is at RMB38.

To pair with a bagel or a salad how about adding a killer Sumerian smoothie? They have different options, all done with homemade yogurt. The first option is made with spinach, mango, banana, and yogurt. Second one with mango, banana, and yogurt. Both come in 2 sizes.  Regular at RMB38 and the super at RMB48.

Why you should drink it: Because it ‘s great, but also because you’ll be drinking it at one of the hottest new spots in Shanghai. 

Named after Houdini’s famous magic trick, the ‘Milk Can’ is an expertly-crafted, creamy coconut cocktail you should try. In a milk bottle they mix turmeric-infused rum, custerapple puree, coconut cream, sago, and egg top toast, with a price tag of RMB95. It’s great and even if you have to wait for them to delicately make it, you’re at a magic bar, so there’s plenty to look at.
